A MODEST PROPOSAL FOR RACIAL JUSTICE IN THE NFL

Lowell Ponte says assault on anthem is attempt to destroy national unity   Wnd.com, August 12, 2018

As the National Football League gears up for another season, players are already taking a knee during our national anthem to protest America. This gesture cost the NFL a fifth of its lucrative television audience in recent years, financially damaging this professional sport.

Why are wealthy and privileged NFL players doing this? A conspiracy theorist might suspect the answer is soccer. Are these players secretly taking billions to alienate American football fans and turn their interest instead to the globalist game of soccer?

American football is a game that produces warriors, while soccer is a game that decides matches largely through sheer endurance, concussions from hitting a ball with bare heads, falling down and pretending to be hurt so as to draw penalties against the other team, and umpires who all too often decide the winners. It is a game of lowest-common-denominator equality run by the game’s capricious socialist rulers.

A society able to win wars has children who play martial games. As the first Duke of Wellington said after defeating Napoleon, “The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton,” an elite British school, before today’s “sissy” soccer was established.

The football player who launched the protests was then-San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who wore socks depicting police officers as pigs and tee shirts glorifying Fidel Castro, whose Communist dictatorship in Cuba he praised.

Kaepernick seems unaware that Castro – a white – ousted a part-black socialist ruler of Cuba, Fulgencio Batista; or that those ruling Castro’s racist régime have been almost entirely white. (I’ve witnessed this myself as a journalist in Cuba.)

What of other NFL players who have taken a knee or otherwise shown their disapproval during our national anthem? Some may be ideological or ignorant. Others may be egoists saying “Look at me!” As often-mediocre players, they love the favorable coverage given to their protests by our left-leaning media.

The left loves such protests, of course, because they are the racial polarization and divide-and-conquer identity politics on which the Democratic Party feeds to gain power.

The national anthem is traditionally a moment of national unity and harmony for Americans regardless of team, race, or class – a moment free from political differences – so this assault on the anthem itself is an obvious attempt to destroy American national unity.

However, some protesting NFL members have a legitimate point.

Skin pigmentation does seem to color the life experiences and professions of people. To change this, governments and universities and corporations have in many cases undertaken affirmative action that requires racial hiring and preferences, even if this undermines pure meritocracy.

Professional sports have been examples of excellence for all of us and our children. They have matched up the best players, regardless of skin color or ethnicity, and set the highest standard of human achievement that merits the respect of all Americans. Football champions have inspired and become heroes to all of us.

However, to advance society’s equality and fairness, we sadly must end this. We must, as in many other professions, replace merit with a different standard that reflects the makeup of America as a whole.

This must be done by what civil rights rulings have called “disparate impact.” If a community is 12 percent Eskimo, but a local company has less than this share of Eskimo employees, this is taken as clear evidence of racial discrimination. It must be corrected by a preferential quota requiring the hiring of Eskimos.

African-American males are only about six percent of America’s population, yet they are so talented that they are approximately 70 percent of NFL players.

The NFL, to fix football’s inequality, should be required to hire and fire players until by, say, 2020, each team fits the mix of America itself. In the most recent census, the U.S. was 12.6 percent African-American, 16.3 percent Hispanic or Latino, 4.8 percent Asian-American, 72.4 percent white – oh, and 53 percent female. NFL players should reflect that same diversity as America.

If our sports are to be politicized, then it is time we make merit and talent secondary and impose racial quotas first and foremost. Sports should reflect America’s proportion of races.

Painful as it will be to lose the excellence of today’s pro football, these teams should be brought into line with America’s national racial and gender profile. To do less would be racist and sexist. Our sports should be living examples of equality not only in words and gestures, but also in fact.
