Dear Friends,
Yesterday marked 77 years after the aerial bombing of Pearl Harbor on Oahu in Hawaii, which occurred on December 7, 1941 in Washington or on December 8, 1941 in Tokyo. It came about due to a lack of diplomacy and the oil embargo against Japan, which encouraged its military and naval forces to commit an act of war against the United States. As a result, so many Americans, including airmen, Coast Guardsmen, Marines, sailors, soldiers and civilians were killed during that attack on American territories of Guam, Hawaii and the Philippines. It is my hope America will not be attacked by China, North Korea or Russia. Read the attached President’s letter. JWS

RE: SECURITY FOR KOREAN PENINSULA THOUGH ECONOMIC INCENTIVES
Dear Mr. President:
Thank you for your November 30, 2018 letter regarding relations between the United States and North Korea. In earlier analytical reports and letters, rather than just merely expressing my views I had proposed an economic plan with Pyongyang that would definitely provide an incentive for the regime of Chairman Kim Jong Un to seriously consider denuclearization for his nation. But, unfortunately, apparently active members of your Administration in Washington are now unable to comprehend and understand that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has vast mineral resources including the rare earths and with the already existing American technology could provide far greater wealth than by exporting its very high quality anthracite coal to China and other Asian countries for only about $100 per metric ton instead of at least $1000 after being processed to considerably enhance its value. It would also enable advanced industries to start up.
In addition to economic incentives, a goodwill policy would go a long way when food and other humanitarian aid is sent to the hungry and starving North Koreans who also require medical help.
While there is still a window of opportunity, I would urge you initiate such a program as the one proposed by me nearly a year ago. However, unless you act soon on this serious matter, it is very possible that Kim may even be replaced by a Stalinist hardliner and unfortunately we do not have any effective Missile Defense System in operation to protect Americans from a nuclear attack.
Sincerely,
John W. Spring
