Dear Friends,

The following article written by me may possibly give an additional meaning to Veterans’ Day.

BETRAYAL: SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT ON VETERANS’ DAY

John W. Spring

Note: If for some reason the article, “Turkeys’ Attack on the Kurds Is a Betrayal of the U.S.” by Noah Feldman does not appear after my article, please look it up on the Internet at https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-01-23/turkey-s-attack-on-the-kurds-is-a-betrayal-of-the-u-s.  NOTICE: The aforementioned year was 2018, almost two years ago.

As we remember Veterans’ Day, which was previously called Armistice Day, besides honoring those brave American men and women who served our nation during times of peace and war, it should also be appropriate for us to express our gratitude to those in other nations who also fought and served against a common enemy, but, unfortunately, they are apparently forgotten or unknown. Furthermore, from the Truman administration in 1949 until the Trump administration in 2019, over a period of at least 70 years, we have betrayed some of our closest and most loyal allies who fought and died so that America would remain free. After President Truman had betrayed Free China, instead of world leaders going to Washington to meet with him, they would then visit General MacArthur in because of his fine character and honesty. Because the Truman administration supported the Stalinist Communist Chinese, the Korean War broke out in 1950. Then MacArthur was fired by Truman and, now, we have the regime in Beijing to reckon with as well as the one at Pyongyang.

Why has the war in Afghanistan become our longest war? Because we betrayed the Afghan people during the administration of President George W. Bush when then National Security Adviser Dr. Condoleezza Rice had made arrangements for U.S. troops to be deployed to several Central Asian nations along the northern border of Afghanistan. So after 9-11, American and former Soviet soldiers invaded Afghanistan. Few Americans were aware that the Russians had killed over a million Afghans during Soviet occupation from 1979 until 1989. How would you like war criminals returning to your country ten years later? However, corporate interests of the multinationals’ gas and oil activity in the landlocked Caspian-Aral Basin of Central Asia was more important than the lives of so many Afghans. The Afghans do not like the Taliban, who were fundamentalist Islamic students from madrassas in India and Pakistan and imposing Sharia Law in Afghanistan. How would you like foreigners from other countries ruling you?

Now, the Trump administration has betrayed the Kurds in northern Syria and Iraq. The Kurds were our most loyal allies in the ongoing war against the so-called Islamic State or ISIS. When we withdrew U.S. armed forces from outposts in northern Syria, the Turks and Russians moved in and Syrian President Assad will provide little, if any, help to the Kurds. So, as of right now, the only measures being taken by the U.S. near that so-called Buffer Zone, which are really “Killing Fields” where the Kurds are being slaughtered, are only to protect the oil fields that are in the land designated for the Kurds after the end of the First World War going back to Armistice Day now called Veterans’ Day. Yes, there is far more that needs to be told and remembered.

Turkey’s Attack on the Kurds Is a Betrayal of the U.S.

by Noah Feldman

President Erdogan thinks he can spurn American interests without consequence. How long can such an alliance last?
